SEO vs Social Media: Which Should You Focus On First?

SEO and social media are not rivals: social platforms hold top-10 slots in 62% of the searches we studied. Here is how to choose where to start and how to combine them.

For most businesses the honest answer is both, in an order: start with the pages on your own site that can rank, then use social platforms to get those pages found. The two overlap more than people expect. In our study of 6,620 US searches, 62.2% had a social, video, forum or other platform page in the top 10, so social content is already part of what search shows.

What is the difference?

  • SEO earns traffic from people searching for something. It compounds slowly, and the asset you build is on your own domain.
  • Social media reaches people in a feed. It is faster to start and fades quickly unless the platform also surfaces the content in search.

Which should a beginner start with?

  1. If you have no pages that answer searches yet, start with the site: a few pages that answer the questions your customers search. Our keyword research guide shows how to choose realistic ones.
  2. If you have good pages that are not getting found, use social platforms to point at them. That is the idea behind parasite SEO: publish something useful on a platform that already ranks, with an honest link back.
  3. If you sell locally, a complete public Facebook Page and Google Business Profile matter early, because they appear in local results. See does social media help local SEO.

Can SEO and social media work together?

Yes, in specific ways:

  • A video or thread can rank for a search your own page struggles with (examples).
  • Links and mentions from public posts can help search engines discover a new page, though nothing guarantees crawling or ranking. See getting pages indexed faster.
  • Content written once can be adapted for several platforms. The Page Atomizer does that from a page of your site.

Which platforms show up in search?

It varies by search. In our data YouTube appeared in the top 10 for about 26% of searches and Facebook for about 19%, Reddit and Quora for about 9% each, LinkedIn for 4%, and Medium for 3%. Full numbers and by-niche breakdowns are on parasite SEO statistics; parasite SEO vs traditional SEO compares the approaches directly.

A simple first-month plan

  1. Pick one page on your site and one search it should answer.
  2. Check which platform already ranks for that search.
  3. Publish one useful post there, with a disclosed link to your page.
  4. Check in a few weeks whether either page moved.

Method: 6,620 niche and intent searches run for the US in October 2026, top 50 results recorded and classified by host. A snapshot, not a ranking guarantee.
