8 Parasite SEO Mistakes That Waste Time (and What to Do Instead)

Choosing by domain authority, defaulting to Medium, starting new Reddit posts, copying your own page: eight common parasite SEO mistakes, backed by data from 6,620 searches.

The most common parasite SEO mistakes come from choosing the platform before checking the search. Here are eight, with what the data from our study of 6,620 US searches suggests doing instead.

1. Choosing the platform by domain authority

A high-authority domain is useless if it does not rank for your kind of search. In our data, YouTube appeared in about 26% of searches, Facebook 19%, Reddit and Quora about 9% each, and many well-known sites barely registered. Instead: check which platform already ranks for your exact search. See how to choose parasite SEO sites.

2. Defaulting to Medium

Older guides lead with Medium. It appeared in 3.1% of our searches, and new accounts have been sandboxed for a long time. Instead: use a platform that ranks for your search. Read is Medium worth it.

3. Starting a new Reddit post when a ranking thread exists

A new post starts from zero. Instead: find the thread that already ranks and add a better answer. See does Reddit help SEO and the Reddit playbook.

4. Copying your own page word for word

A duplicate competes with the original. Instead: give each placement its own angle on the same topic, which is what the Page Atomizer is for.

5. Posting a short feed post where an article ranks

On LinkedIn, the pages that ranked in our scrape were long-form articles with about 1,900 words, not feed posts. Instead: write the format that ranks. See the LinkedIn playbook.

6. Chasing searches that are closed

Searches where brands and publishers hold the whole top 10 rarely open up. Instead: use the free checker and keyword research to pick searches where platforms already appear.

7. Hiding who you are

Undisclosed promotion gets removed and can get accounts banned. Instead: say who you are, answer the question first, and link once where it helps. Google's wording on third-party content is summarised in what its policy says.

8. Not measuring

Without checking, you cannot tell whether a placement ranks or sends traffic. Instead: note the target search, check it a few weeks later, and keep what works. The checklist below turns this into steps.
