Is Medium Worth It for SEO in 2026? Mostly Not

For most searches, Medium is not worth it for SEO in 2026. In our study of 6,620 US searches, Medium appeared in the top 10 for only 3.1% of them, at an average position of 5.8. YouTube appeared in 25.8% and Facebook in 19.4%. On top of that, Parasite SEO Poster does not recommend Medium as a host: new accounts have been sandboxed for a long time and its publishing API is closed, so a post there is often work spent on a page that will not rank.

Almost every older parasite SEO guide still opens with "publish on Medium". The data says otherwise.

How often does Medium rank?

Medium's best showing was in "problems" searches (8%), "tips" (7%) and "is it worth it" searches (6%). On "best", "reviews", "cost", "pricing" and "top rated" searches it was close to absent. Is there any case for Medium?

A narrow one. If your exact search already shows a Medium article in the top 10, there is a ranking page you could try to match, and a well-aimed article from an established account might get through. Check that first; if no Medium page appears for your search, skip it.

How do I get Medium articles indexed?

Publish publicly, link to the article from other pages, and search the exact headline in quotes a few weeks later. Indexing is never guaranteed, and it is less likely from a new account. If it is not indexed after that, move the effort elsewhere.

What should I use instead?

Match the platform to the search:

• Decision questions ("is it worth it", "vs alternatives"): a comment on a Reddit thread that already ranks, or a Quora answer.
• How-to and comparison searches: YouTube, where the description is indexed text on a domain nobody will outrank.
• Long-tail professional topics: a LinkedIn article, which indexes quickly and faces little competition on the platform.
• Local services: Facebook.
