Quora ranks in Google for about 8% of the searches we studied, mostly "is it worth it" and "vs alternatives" questions. Here is when an answer helps and when it doesn't.

Posting on Quora can help you reach people searching a question, but it does not make your own site rank. In our study of 6,620 US searches, Quora pages appeared in the top 10 for 9.4% of them, with an average position of 5.9. They clustered around three kinds of search: "pros and cons" (33% of those searches), "is it worth it" questions (30%) and "vs alternatives" comparisons (21%).
That is real visibility, and it is concentrated. If your question is not one Quora already ranks for, an answer there is unlikely to be seen.
When does Quora rank in Google?
Quora ranks for question-shaped searches where people want an opinion. From our data:

Does a Quora answer help my own site rank?
Not directly. A link in a Quora answer can send readers to your page, and the answer itself can rank, but no tactic guarantees that your own page will move. How to write a Quora answer that is worth the time
- Start from a question that already ranks. Search your target phrase, note the Quora pages in the results, and answer those.
- Give the answer in the first lines. Then explain the reasoning.
- Disclose your affiliation. Say you work on or run the site you mention.
- Link as supporting material. Point to the page that goes deeper, not as a substitute for the answer.
- Revisit it. Answers on ranking questions keep getting views; update them when facts change.

What are the risks?
