Which Sites Do AI Answers Cite for SEO Questions? A Small Study
We asked an AI answer engine 25 SEO questions and counted the sources it cited. Brand and SEO publisher sites led; platforms like Reddit appeared less than you might expect.

In a small test of 25 SEO questions, the sources an AI answer engine cited were mostly SEO publishers and tool vendors, with only occasional community platforms. This is a pilot, not a benchmark: one answer engine, 25 questions, an average of about three cited sources per answer. We ran it in October 2026 to get a baseline for how AI answers treat parasite SEO topics.
What did we ask?
Twenty-five questions across five groups: parasite SEO ("What is the best parasite SEO tool?", "Is parasite SEO still worth it in 2026?"), platform questions ("Does posting on Reddit help SEO?"), indexing and social ("How do I get my new pages indexed faster?"), AI search itself ("What is generative engine optimization?") and questions that name our product.
Which sites were cited most?
Counting the number of answers each site was cited in:
| Site | Answers citing it |
|---|---|
| digital-loop.com | 3 |
| parasiteseo.com | 3 |
| neilpatel.com | 3 |
| parasiteseoposter.com | 3 |
| junia.ai | 2 |
| augmun.co.uk | 2 |
| blackhatworld.com | 2 |
| reddit.com | 2 |
| skywork.ai | 2 |
| distribb.io | 2 |
Most other sites appeared once. With answers citing so few sources, a single page can move these numbers.
What stands out?
- SEO publishers and tool vendors dominate. The cited pages were mostly explainers and tool lists from SEO blogs and software companies.
- Reddit appeared in 2 answers; LinkedIn in 1; Quora, Medium, YouTube and Facebook in none. Platforms that rank often in Google (our statistics) were rarely cited by this answer engine.
- Our own site appeared in 4 of 25 answers, but 3 of those were questions that named the product directly. In the 22 non-branded questions it appeared once.
What does this mean for generative engine optimization?
Treat it as a hypothesis, not a finding: a clear, citable explainer on a topic seems to matter more than a social post. That fits advice to write pages that answer the question directly, with sources and original data. It also suggests that for AI visibility the page on your own site (or a respected publisher's) may be what gets cited, and platform posts may help most by driving links and discussion to it.
What should you do?
- Publish the citable page first. A direct answer, a definition up top, data you collected. Our parasite SEO statistics page is an example.
- Earn mentions on the sites that get cited: lists such as "best tools" posts and publishers in your field.
- Use platforms to circulate it, following the platform playbooks.
- Measure. Ask the questions your customers ask on a schedule and track whether your site is named.

Method: 25 questions put to one AI answer engine (fast mode) in October 2026; sources counted by host per answer. A pilot with a small sample; repeat before drawing conclusions.
